Patxi Vila ne participera pas au Tour d'Italie. L'Espagnol faisait pourtant partie de la liste des engagés de la Lampre, mais il a été contrôlé positif à la testostérone en mars et son équipe a donc décidé de l'exclure du Giro. Vila a subi à son domicile un contrôle inopiné diligenté par l'UCI le 3 mars, et il a demandé une contre-expertise. Vila n'a pas pris non plus le départ de la 4e étape du Tour de Romandie en Suisse.
